Asheville Savings Bank Holds Employee-Centric STARS Event - Wednesday, May 07, 2014

Jennifer Duvall and Suzanne DeFerieAsheville Savings Bank recently hosted their annual employee-centered event, STARS, to thank, reward, and celebrate the dedication and work each and every Asheville Savings Bank employee has provided throughout the prior year. This year’s STARS event was set to the tone of Rock ‘n’ Roll, giving each employee the chance to dress up in character, and while the event is geared towards celebrating the prior year and the employees that made the bank’s success possible, it is the STARS President’s Award that coveted the most attention. This award is given annually to one employee who provides exemplary leadership that embodies the bank’s core values of customer focus, community focus, character and capital growth.

This year’s STARS President’s Award was presented by Suzanne DeFerie, President and CEO of Asheville Savings Bank to Jennifer Duvall, an Asheville Savings Bank mortgage lender. When asked what the STARS award meant to Duvall, she replied, “I am so honored to be recognized by such a wonderful company, and moreover, this is truly a recognition that I consider as the achievement of a professional and personal goal.”

The event rallied Asheville Savings Bank’s employees to come together and celebrate one another’s hard work, and the overall forward progress of the bank that each and every employee has contributed to. President and CEO of Asheville Savings Bank, Suzanne DeFerie remarked, “Our STARS event gives us the chance to really slow down and applaud our employees for their hard work, and reflect on how grateful Asheville Savings Bank is to have such dedicated people making a difference for the bank and the communities in which we serve. ASHEVILLE, NC (January 8, 2014) – David A. Wooten has joined the Asheville Savings Bank team as the Vice President, Market Manager of the Marion and Black Mountain Banking Centers. David brings more than 30 years of banking experience with the last nineteen being in McDowell County. He is very involved with business and consumer lending. David is located at the Marion banking center.

 
David believes in developing long term professional relationships by providing a high level of customer satisfaction. “I am pleased to be with Asheville Savings Bank and look forward to meeting all of my customers and welcoming new ones”. “My goal is to always exceed my customer’s expectations.” 
 
Community involvement is one of David’s passions and he has served as past President of the Marion Rotary Club and currently serves on the board of directors. Important VISA Debit Card Information - Monday, December 23, 2013

Target has indicated that there was “unauthorized access to Target payment card data” which impacts cards used at U.S. Target stores between 11/27/2013 and 12/15/2013. Purchases made online at Target’s website were not impacted. Asheville Savings Bank is committed to protecting our customer’s account information, and thus will be taking steps to minimize the impact of this breach. Steps include increasing our card transaction monitoring efforts and continuing to communicate with our customers throughout this process. As a reminder, you are not responsible for fraudulent charges on your account.

It is recommended that customers closely monitor their bank statements for unauthorized charges and report fraudulent activity immediately to one of our banking centers. ASHEVILLE SAVINGS BANK WOMEN’S INITIATIVE LAUNCHED - Tuesday, November 19, 2013

 ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Nov. 19, 2013 – Asheville Savings Bank, the largest community bank chartered and headquartered in Asheville, Buncombe County, recently announced the successful debut of its Women’s Initiative. The well-attended kick-off of the inspirational program was held at The Country Club of Asheville.

According to Suzanne DeFerie, president and CEO, Asheville Savings Bank, the objective of the bank’s new initiative is to provide engagement opportunities for women to network and access invaluable, strategic financial knowledge. The initiative delivers on Asheville Savings Bank’s commitment to support the Western North Carolina communities in which the bank serves.

“Initial response to our Women’s Initiative has been overwhelmingly positive,” DeFerie said. “We are looking forward to hosting additional educational and networking events in which attendees leave feeling more empowered to make informed, healthy financial decisions.”

The Asheville Savings Bank Women’s Initiative launch event featured guest speaker, Meredith Elliott, senior sales manager, LPL Insurance Associates, and a nationally recognized expert in the field of financial investments. Elliott addressed the topic of “Key Financial Strategies for Today’s Executive Woman.”

Laura Copeland, vice president of public policy, Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce, attended the inaugural event and praised the program’s content.

“Suzanne DeFerie and her team provided a delightful opportunity for executive women to learn new strategies for navigating through critical financial decisions, while also enjoying chocolates and other goodies. What a lovely way to strengthen our financial planning strategies with a keen focus on issues of particular concern to women,” Copeland said. “The evening was innovative, eye opening and fun. Congrats to Asheville Savings Bank for launching this new initiative.”

Appalachian Women Entrepreneurs Program to feature Leslie Fay as Keynote Speaker - Monday, August 05, 2013

Leslie Fay, Customer Service Representative with Asheville Savings Bank will serve as the Keynote Speaker for the upcoming Appalachian Women Enterpreneurs (AWE) program on August 20, 2013. Her topic will be “How to Help Your Banker Become Your Advocate”. This program is hosted by HandMade in America with the theme of As Craft Artists, How Many Hats Do We Wear? The daylong seminar will host several breakout sessions and will be held at HandMade in America in Asheville. 
 
HandMade’s AWE Program teaches women in WNC communities the important business, creative, industry, and access-to-market skills necessary to develop and manage small businesses in today’s economic climate. The AWE Program provides these women with:
  • Important network of peers and fellow female artists
  • Access to resources and educational materials
  • Opportunities to gain experience and implement skills learned
  • Follow-through coaching to overcome barriers to success
 
Asheville Youth Cycling Team Sweeps French Broad Cycling Classic in Every Age Group - Wednesday, July 31, 2013

 ASHEVILLE, NC (July 31, 2013) – The Asheville Youth Cycling team, a local nonprofit dedicated to introducing kids from ages 10 to 18 to the competitive world of cycling, competed and swept the French Broad Cycling Classic winning every age class for the JR Omnium. The French Broad Cycling Classic is an Omnium, or competition comprised of three events. The following are winners from the Asheville Youth Cycling team:

  • JR Men 17-18: Andrew Fairman won the Omnium, time trail and placed second in both the road race and criterium.
  • JR Men 15-16: Omnium winners include Devin Reavis in first place with Micah Milne and Coleman Hamrick taking second. Reavis also won the time trial and the road race.
  • JR Men 13-14: Conor Schunk won the Omnium, time trail and criterium. Teammate Davis Turner took third place in the Omnium.
  • JR Men 10-12: Alastair Pounder won the Omnium as well as the time trial, road race and criterium. Teammate Ben Mckenzie placed third in the Omnium.

“The generous support of Asheville Savings Bank along with other local businesses, has allowed Asheville Youth Cycling to bring participation rates in junior cycling to levels never seen before in the Carolinas,” said Alan Brookshire, Junior Cycling Coordinator for Carolinas Cycling Association. “Our goal remains to introduce local kids to the sport of cycling and show them how to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle.”

ASHEVILLE, NC (July 23, 2013) – The North Carolina School of Banking is the oldest state association banking school in the nation and is designed to equip emerging leaders in the banking industry with the knowledge to step into future leadership roles, overcome challenges and learn innovative ways for organizational profit, growth and exceeding customer expectations.

They include senior students Chris Crawford, VP Deposit Operations Manager, Joe Ward, Regional Executive, our junior student, Jarrod Perkins, AVP Market Manager, Downtown Banking Center, and sophomore students Rhonda Rice, VP Banking Center Services Manager, Scott Workman, AVP, Market Manager, West Banking Center, Andrea Lankton, AVP Special Asset Manager, and our freshman, Julie Goodman, Internal Auditor.

North Carolina School of Banking is held each summer on the campus of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Faculty members include experienced bankers, regulatory officials, attorneys and other experts in the industry.

As I look to my final year, I am extremely excited to have the opportunity to participate in the bank simulation model. Bittman-Neville Awarded 2013 "Ruler" Award by Haywood County Chamber - Friday, July 05, 2013

Nyda Bittmann-Neville, VP and Director of Marketing and  Communications for Asheville Savings Bank was recently presented with the Ruler Award by the Haywood Chamber of Commerce. The Ruler Award is presented to a Chamber member who has helped “inch” the Chamber forward in a specific area. Under Nyda’s leadership of the Chamber’s Women in Business, they established “Partners in Leadership”, a mentor program with the young women of the Chamber’s Young Professionals. The objective is to assist young women of Haywood County to progress successfully in their careers and become future leaders of the community.

2013 Economic Outlook Business Provided Insight Into Local Economy - Monday, March 18, 2013

 ASHEVILLE, NC (March 12, 2013) – Asheville Savings Bank was proud to present leading financial expert John Canally, senior vice president, and economist at LPL Financial for the annual 2013 Economic Outlook Business meetings. Canally spoke to more than 200 people from the Hendersonville and Marion Chambers of Commerce to discuss the economy on a global level and its effect on Western North Carolina.

Canally is a chartered financial analyst with extensive industry experience. Canally earned his BA in Economics from Villanova University and attended Stern Graduate School of Business at NYU.

Deborah NealASHEVILLE, NC (Jan. 30, 2013) – Asheville Savings Bank is excited to announce Deborah Neal’s appointment to banking center manager for the Hendersonville Banking Center in addition to her current responsibilities as banking center manager for the Fletcher location.

 
Neal has been with Asheville Savings Bank since 2008 and has more than 14 years of experience in the finance industry, including a background in business banking. Neal is a graduate of Western Carolina University.
 
“I truly am very excited about returning my focus to Hendersonville and Henderson County!  This is where I began my banking career, and this is where I call home,” said Neal. “I want to play an integral role in building the Hendersonville market for Asheville Savings Bank.”
